Application of Electron Microscopic X-ray Microanalysis in Secondary Hemochromatosis

Objective To observe the ultrastructural changes of skin and compositions of fine structures in the cytoplasm in the patients with secondary hemochromatosis.Methods Transmission electron microscope equipped with an X-ray microanalyzer was used.Results The electron-dense granules in endothelial cells of capillary and macrophages in dermis were classified into five types, and were confirmed to contain iron. The siderosomes were seen in both pigmented and non-pigmented skin.Conclusion Occurrence of siderosomes in skin may be a useful index suggesting the iron overload;it is valuable for establishing diagnosis to biopsy on either pigmented or non-pigmented skin.
