Correlation Between Penicillin-binding Protein PPNG Gene and Penicillin Resistance in Neisseria Gonorrhea

Xie Ping,Mi Zu-Huang,Li Qin, et al (Central Lab.No.1 Hospital of Wuxi,Wuxi 214002,China)
Objective To investigate correlation between penicillin-binding protein 2 gene (Pen A),penicillinase-producing Neisseria gonorhoeae (PPNG) and penicillin resistance in Neisseria gonorrhea. Methods DNA of PPNG isolated from 97 clinical gonorrhea strains were detected by nested PCR and PenA gene sequences were analyzed. Results PPNG was discovered in 67 of 97 strains of gonorrhea.A point mutation was found in PenA gene of 4 strains with PPNG negative and penicillin resistance. Conclusion PPNG is the main cause of penicillin resistance in clinical gonorrhea strains.Gene mutation may decrease the affinity of penicillin-binding protein 2 in penicillin-resistant strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
