Disenchantment and Reconstruction: A Study on Writings about Norman Bethune in New Immigrant Chinese Literature in Canada

Peng Guichang;
Henry Norman Bethune is a household name in China,however,the Chinese people's understanding of him is basically influenced by the collective memory. They just regard him as a hero and role model and ignore his personality and emotion as an individual. On one hand,Canadian-Chinese writers recognize Bethune's greatness under the influence of collective memory,on the other hand,they have a deeper understanding of Norman Bethune owing to their perspective on the margin. Their literary creation has explored the root of the great spirit of Bethune,restored Bethune as an real and emotional individual,and challenged the flat character of Bethune as a result of the collective memory.
