Structuralism:Form Prague to Everywhere
Peter Steiner;Chen Tao;
My paper will focus on the formation and the dissemination of the Structuralist paradigm in linguistics,literary criticism and social studies. The label"Structuralism "was coined in 1929 by Roman Jakobson to characterize the newapproach to language and letters pioneered by members of the Prague Linguistic Circle( 1926-1949). In contrast to the Romantic and Positivistic philology they treated cultural phenomena"not as a mechanical aggregation but as a structural whole"and strove "to reveal the inner laws of the system-whether synchronic and diachronic,"determined by "the function they served."The presentation will illustrate howthe Prague scholars departed from the tenets of Saussurean linguistics and outline three stages in the history of this intellectual movement. It will conclude with discussing howthe Prague School 's ideas gained a world-wide currency after the World War Ⅱ due to the emigration of some of the Circle's members to the USA( Roman Jakobson,René Wellek),and the return of Peter Bogatyrёv to the USSR,eventually triggering the rise of the Structuralist paradigm around the globe.
