Individual and Collective Values in Chinese and American Science Fiction:Take The Cold Equations and Its Adaptations as Examples

Zhan Ling;
Based on the American science fiction The Cold Equations and its adaptations,and other typical texts which have the similar thinking of the values as in The Cold Equations,this article explores howscience fiction writers predetermine the survival situation,and their value orientation in individualism,ethnicity and nationalism. It argues that,first,different life experience of the writer,different national history and social situation,determine the values presented in different novels; Secondly,the "doomsday "value in the science fictions is based on the post-crisis mindsets,which doesn't apply to the peaceful world,and only clear and rational thinking can construct the contemporary Chinese cultural value system with true subjectivity and live vitality.
