Inhibition of Hypericum perforatum extract on influenza A virus

Objective To study the antiviral effect of Hypericum perforatum extract(HPE) on influenza A virus(IAV) in vitro and in vivo.Methods Cell survival rate and inhibition rate were served as target to evaluate antiviral activity of HPE by MTT.Kunming mice infected with intranasal IAV were treated by ig HPE and Oseltamivir in vivo,respectively.The major criteria for evaluating the effects of HPE on mortality,life-prolong rate,and viral pneumonia of mice.Results The results showed that cell survival rate and inhibitory rate increased with the increasing concentration of HPE in vitro. There were significant differences as compared with the virus control group(P0.01).HPE could decrease the mortality of mice infected with IAV,prolong survival time,and reduce that symptoms of viral pneumonia(P0.01).Conclusion These results indicates that HPE showed an obvious antiviral activity on IAV in vitro and in vivo.
