The backwater regions of the free vibration of sliding systems with linear, hardening or softening restoring force are analyzed comprehensively; relevant analytical solutions are obtained; the continuity and regularity of these solutions changing with the system parameters are demonstrated. The results show that the backwater regions of the sliding systems are continuous everywhere in the whole domain of the system parameters, increasing monotonously with the friction coefficient and decreasing with the linear and non-linear restoring force parameters. Relative to the system with a linear restoring force, the backwater region of the softening system can be increased by 50% at most; the softening parameter should be kept above a lower limit, otherwise the softening system will be lack of backwater regions.
