Multi-hole damage detection in structures based on genetic algorithms and topology optimization

In considering advantages of genetic algorithm(GA) and topology optimization in structural damage identification,a new method of multiple-damage identification in two-dimensional structure was established by combining genetic algorithm,finite element method and topology optimization.The objective function and constraint equations of topology optimization were linked with the fitness function of GA,the design variables of topology optimization and parameters of genetic algorithm were unified,and the constraint equations of topology optimization were taken as a condition to control the whole genetic computing loop.Instead of using continuous variables topology optimization,binary-coded genetic algorithm was used in multi-damage identification of a two-dimensional structure with hole damages to avoid the possible negative impaction brought by the parameter threshold determination in continuous variables topology optimization.The results of two simulation examples showed that this method is feasible in two-dimensional structure damage detection;for the cases of light hole-damage difficult to be identified with the topology optimization method,the results coincident with those in actual situation can be obtained with the proposed method.
