Void nucleation and fracture angles of mixed Ⅰ and Ⅱ modes in 16MnR steel

In this paper an approach to the propagation directions of cracks of mixed Ⅰ and Ⅱ modes with the numerical ridge lines of mechanical parameters involved in micromechanics of fracture in the crack-tip vicinities is represented by means of elastic-plastic finite element analyses and experiments of 4-point bending precracked beams of 16MnR steel. The results indicate that mixed mode fracture includes two mechanisms: When the Ⅰ-Ⅱ mode loading ratio,M/Q, is over a critical, the mechanism forthe fracture is of equiaxised dimples and the propagation direction depends on the voids nucleating early from large MnS inclusions and is consistent with the σm/σ ridge line under preliminary loading. As theloading ratio is below the critical, the mechanism is changed to shearing along the maximum principal shear stress within the crack-tip vicinity. The conversion of mechanism is attributed to the decreaseof σm/σ as M/Q descends.
