The study of the antiwear mechanism of inorganic borate additives

Chen Yong Zhou Guiru Zhou Huaishen(Tribological Research Center)  
With the TMK tester and point-contact friction-wear testing machine respectively, the tribological parameters of the lubricants blended with inorganic borate additives under the boundary lubrication condition were measured and analysed. The Auger Electron Spec-troscopy(AES) was applied to determine elements and their amounts on the worn surfaces . It is found that borate additives possess small friction-reducing effect and excellent antiwear property,and that under varying friction conditions there are different amounts of elements on the worn surfaces. It is concluded that the adhesive and slippery layers and the chemically reacted films on metal surfaces account for the antiwear property of the inorganic borate additives.
