Research on MAC layer protocol in HFC network

At present, the Hybrid Fiber/Coax network architecture is one competitive solution of resident broadband access network. The IEEE 802.14 working group has standardized the protocol of PHY MAC layers in HFC network, and ended with a draft in April 1998. Based on the draft, this paper simulates the MAC layer operations, and the system performance such as throughput and package delay is obtained. Some factors affecting the performance such as the headend service rule, the piggyback request ability and the request slot number are also discussed. The conclusions obtained have the guiding significance for system design.
