New type of Fe-Mn-Al-Cr stainless steel's structure and acid resistance

Several new Fe-Mn-Al-Cr alloys containing different chrominum and aluminium are desigend. It can be seen from the metallographs that the structures of alloys containing 15wt% Mn can be austenite. Both chrominum and aluminium promote the formation of ferrite. The result of immersion tests and anode polarization curves show that the acid resistance of new designed alloys is superior to that of alloy containing 26% Mn. With the increasing of Cr, the alloy's resistance improved at first, then decreased. Al makes the alloy's acid resistance worse. Mo improves alloy's resistance to nitric acid, but it has no effect on the resistance to sulphuric acid. After tested, some much cheaper alloys with better acid resistance are designed. After being passivated, some new alloy's resistance to nitric acid is better than that of 1Cr18Ni9Ti.
