Experimental research on flow field of horizontal square cyclone using particle image velocimetry

Flow field in a horizontal square cyclone was measured by using particle image velocimetry(PIV) technology to obtain the typical moving image of particle distribution in the cyclone.Calculation of the planar instantaneous velocity distributions on three different cross sections with gray distribution cross-correlation arithmetic showed that the flow in the cyclone moves as a clockwise swirl with higher velocity in the middle region and lower velocity near the wall.A small swirl was also found at the right upper corner of the cyclone.The average planar velocity distributions on the middle cross section were calculated from the test data and compared to theoretical values obtained by numerical simulation with Reynolds stress model(RSM).The results show that good agreement is achieved between observed and theoretical values in most of regions except those near the wall.
