Effect of vanadium dopant on photoinduced super-hydrophilicity of TiO_2 thin films

Transparent V_2O_5-TiO_2 composite nanometer thin films on glass substrates were prepared with sol-gel method and dip-coating technique to study the effect of titanium oxide addition on water contact angle,crystal phase and size.The films were characterized by XRD and visible absorption spectra,and their hydrophilicity was determined by measuring the water contact angles on the films.The results showed that the contact angles of the films were less than10° after UV or sunlight illumination for 40 min.The addition of V_2O_5 to TiO_2 thin films suppresses the structural phase transition and crystal growth of TiO_2 crystal in the TiO_2 thin films.The average crystalline size decreased from 45 nm to 26 nm after doping with V_2O_5.With increasing amount of V_2O_5 mole fraction,the rutile phase of TiO_2 decreases gradually.Finally,the relationship between crystalline size and hydrophilicity under sunlight was investigated.
