Application of genetic algorithms in polarization control

To overcome the local convergence and the additional reset of gradient algorithms based polarization controller,a genetic algorithm based polarization control algorithm was proposed.The algorithm was applied in a 4-plate retardation control type polarization controller with waveplates oriented alternatively at 0° and 45°,and the light intensity changes of output polarization state and waveplates phase shifts controlling the algorithm were investigated.The simulation results show that the polarization controller based on the algorithm can convert the random input polarization state into a fixed linear output polarization state,and that the intensity fluctuation of the output polarization state is less than 2%.The algorithm can allow the phase shift of the plates to vary with a small step within a given limited range,and can avoid the additional fluctuation of polarization state caused by the voltage surge applied to waveplates.
