Optimal locations of water quality monitoring stations in water distribution systems

To resolve the computational complexity in water quality fraction matrix for complicated water distribution systems,a recursion method was used to obtain the coverage matrix under coverage criteria.A new method was proposed based on discrete binary particle swarm optimization(DBPSO) algorithm to help identify optimal water quality monitoring stations(WQMS) in a water distribution system.The proposed method maximized the demand coverage and was explained in detail.The computational results in some cases showed that the water quality fraction matrix of complicated network can be efficiently obtained by recursion method,which can be easily coded.The location of WQMS based on DBPSO algorithm performs better in terms of searching efficiency and can rapidly find the optimal location of WQMS given the number of WQMS.The water quality of WQMS is representative of the whole network.
