Numerical study of plan arrangement effect on wind environment around tall buildings

Numerical simulation was carried out to investigate the wind environmental state around a building complex consisting of six rectangular tall buildings by using the Reynolds averaged equations and the renormalization group(RNG) k-ε turbulence model.The six buildings were initially arranged into two rows and three columns.Eight types of building complex with different plan arrangements were obtained by altering the distance between two adjacent buildings in each column.The wind-velocity ratios and the corresponding velocity vector field around each type of building complex at pedestrian height level (2.0 m) were then examined and compared with each other.The results indicate that the six buildings arranged in a surrounding shape or in two parallel rows generally experience favorable wind environmental conditions.However when the buildings are arranged in a Y-or U-shaped layout the channeling effect and the occurrence of wind speed-up may be significant.
