MODIS images monitoring short-period variation of estuary surface water suspended sediment concentration

The suspended sediment concentration(SSC) in high-energy coastal water in China has high spatial and temporal variation.Three locations were sampled to obtain the SSC data with a typical case of Hangzhou Bay.The moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer(MODIS) and artificial neural network(ANN) techniques were employed to develop the remote sensing inverse model of SSC.In-situ measurements from the Hangzhou Bay showed that the SSC was high and had spatio-temporal variation.The SSC during spring tide were high except that in the quirk near North Bay.The SSC varied with tide changes consistently and varied greatly during short period.BP ANN model yielded high prediction precision compared with regression model.Results indicate that MODIS 250 m daily products and ANN model are useful for monitoring surface SSC dynamics and short-period variation within high-energy coastal water environment.
