Cross-layer multi-path routing protocol for MDC video delivery in wireless sensor networks

This work applied the cross-layer design philosophy of network protocol stack to multimedia wireless sensor networks and proposed a novel cross-layer multi-path routing protocol to maximize the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) of multiple description coding (MDC) video.In the proposed cross-layer multi-path routing model,to maximize MDC video's PSNR of the application layer is the optimization objective,furthermore,the frame loss ratio estimation of physical layer and the channel capacity estimation of MAC layer decide the multi-path routing properties jointly.Finally,each description of the MDC video is mapped to different link-disjoint paths for transmission independently and received by the sink node to recompose.Foreman video sequence was divided into two descriptions and transmitted along different paths which were derived by minimal hop routing with node-disjoint two paths and the proposed cross-layer multi-path routing of random topology.Simulation results verified that the cross-layer multi-path routing can reduce the frame loss ratio and improve the average PSNR.Consequently,the cross-layer multi-path routing protocol can improve the video transmission quality over wireless sensor networks.
