The small-scale model experiments for sandwich pipe test specimens under different inter-layer adhesion conditions were performed in a deep-sea hyperbaric chamber to measure the deformation configurations and the pressure-change in volume response curves,in order to investigate the influence of inter-layer adhesion behavior on the buckle propagation of sandwich pipes.A three-dimensional numerical model of sandwich pipes under the external pressure was established using the finite element software ABAQUS.The nonlinear spring element was used to model the axial and circumferential inter-layer adhesion behavior. Then the local buckle instability and the buckle propagation process of sandwich pipe test specimens were simulated to obtain the deformation configuration and the pressure-change in volume response curve. The numerical results accorded well with the experimental results.Subsequently, the buckle propagation process of sandwich pipes under different inter-layer adhesion conditions was analyzed using the developed numerical simulation method. Results show that good inter-layer adhesion behavior can effectively transfer the force and coordinate the deformation between layers, significantly improve the overall mechanical performance of the structures, enhance the buckle propagation pressure of sandwich pipes, and render it to have better pressure bearing and deformation capacity.
