Erosive wear of silicon carbide whisker-reinforced silicon nitride composite

A range of advanced structural ceramic materials has been tested for comparison in an erosiontester using silicon carbide and quartz sand at different impingement angles.Silicon carbidewhisker-reinforced silicon nitride ceramic showed the best erosive wear resistance both at low impactangles(less than 20°)with SiC erodent and at severe blast conditions of 90°impact with the twokinds of erodent as above. The erosive wear rate of SiCw/Si3N4 composite at 90°impact reduced50% by SiC,while reduced almost 70% by SiO2,compared with normal Si3N4.At otherimpingement angles the erosive wear rates were also lowed in varying degrees.On the basis of SEM analysis,it was found that microfracture appeared to be the main erosivedamage to the surface of SiCw/Si3N4 but accompanied by a certain degree of whisker pullout andbridging,while the eroded surface of normal Si3N4 correspondingly exhibited crumbling as a whole,and therefore it was confirmed primarily that the reason for erosive wear resistance improvement'upon normal Si3N4 by the addition of 20% volume SiC whisker would be explained as that whiskerpullout and bridging efficiently prevented at lateral cracks of eroded surface from spreading andconnecting.It was concluded that the hardness of ceramic appeared to be much more important than otherproperties as well,and the optimum cooperation of Hv and Klc.would help to improve the erosivewear resistance of ceramics.
