Lin Zexu and the Study of History and Geography of Xinjiang

Lin Zexu is not only a great patriot and national hero in the modern history of China, but also an outstanding representative of those who carried out research on Xinjiang's history and geography in the Qing Dynasty. This paper discusses Lin Zexu's study of Xinjiang history and geography as recorded in his diaries, letters, poetry, memorials and miscellaneous writings when he was exiled in Xinjiang. His research, which developed a school of his own, encompassed the history, geography, topography, environment, and natural products of Xinjiang as well as the garrisons and lives of the people. Lin Zexu's abundant and prophetic studies, also reveal his methodology, namely the combination of textual work and on the spot investigation.
