On The Approximate and Unified Calculation Model of Elastic Foundation Settlement

In this paper,based on the concept of spreading angle of pressure and the approximate distribution of soil pressure in subgrade,an approximate and unified calculation model is suggested for settlement calculation of elastic foundations of different schemes.This fundamental conception can not only be used in solving plane problem,but also in calculating spatial problem.By changing the elastic layer depth,it can be used to calculate beam or slab on elastic foundation with various finite depths.While the model results in elastic half—plane or half—space as the elastic layer depth approaches infinity,a 90° spreading angle and thin layer will result in Winkler's model.A brief discussion of the settlement coefficients of foundation derived in China shows that the settlement coefficients for spatial problem in the model with a finite layer depth as computed by elasticity method are smaller by a constant in value than those of elastic half-space,so the computed reactions,shears and moments in beam or slab from both models of elastic foundation are the same,but the calculated settlements may be different.The settlement calculation of a concrete pavement slab is discussed finally.
