Inspection of Metal High Frequency Cyclic Fatigue Behavior Utilizing Acoustic Emission Technique

Acoustic emission (AE) techniques were employed to monitor fatigue crack propagation under high frequency cyclic loading in metallic materials. The methods of software and hardware were introduced to separate AE signals from noises in details. Comparison of the characteristics from AE data and that from observation of crack development demonstrates that AE parameters can be as an effective way to evaluate fatigue damage. Furthermore, the initiation of microcracks in the specimen can be identified earlier with AE technique. According to the experimental results of steel compact tension specimen, an empirical relationship between AE energy rate and stress intensity factor range is formulated at the stage of stable crack growth.
