Study on Ultrasonic C-scan Image Correction in Nondestructive Evaluation of Arc Surface Electric Contact

The mechanism of ultrasonic C-scan testing for brazed interface of arc surface electric contact was investigated. It is found that the transmitting time variance of reflected waves, which is caused by altitude variance of arc surface, results in the superposition of surface echo on the defect echo during the sampling process. Thus there is non-uniform background in ultrasonic C-scan image. The background is satisfied with second surface. The second-order polynomial was used to fit the non-uniform background based on least squares theory. The C-scan image was corrected by removing the fitted background. The experiments show that the fitted results are identical with theoretical analysis. The detrimental effect of non-uniform background on the image is eliminated after correction. The corrected image re-visualizes the defect in the interface accurately.
