Finite Element Analysis of Contact Characteristics of Rolling Radial Tires

To study the dynamic properties of a rolling tire, an accurate 3D tire model was established. The model included geometric nonlinearity due to large deformation, material nonlinearity, the anisotropy of rubber-cord composites, the nonlinear boundary conditions from tire-rim contact and tire-pavement contact. The model can be used to simulate the dynamic changes of a rolling tire and calculate the tire deformation for various operating conditions. Some contact problems, such as the tire deformation, the shape of contact area, the contact pressure distribution, the contact friction stress distribution, the belt stress distribution, were discussed in detail. These parameters were determined from the calculated deformations of the tire body and tread and the distribution of vertical and longitudinal forces along the contact path. The cap deformation was studied as a main problem. The results possess a guiding value in tire design and analysis of tire vibration and noise.
