Forward Modeling of Relationship Between Coal Seam Thickness and Seismic Attributes of Amplitude and Frequency

Based on geologic and seismic interpretation, the seismic geological model was designed. The seismic attributes of reflected wave amplitude and frequency in the situation of loss, denudation, pinch-out, and merging of coal seams was simulated. The sensitivity of such attributes to the thickness of different coal seams was discussed. The result shows that 1) when the thickness of coal seam is 0-8 m, there is a monotone nonlinear relation between amplitude or frequency and thickness; 2) when thickness is 8-13 m, only the frequency band can be used to predict thickness; and 3) if the thickness is more than 13m, the thickness is determined by calculating the velocity and the travel time of both roof and floor.
