Investigation of mechanism of genu recurvatum by the loss of proprioception in cerebrovascular accident patients

Objective:To investigate mechanism of genu recurvatum by proprioception loss degree, consequently, and to confirm the countermeasure of clinical rehabilitation therapy.Method:Sixty-four hemiplegic patients caused by stroke were recruited and assigned into 2 groups according to proprioception lose degree.1st group (There were proprioception on the ankle) 49 patients, 2nd group(There were no proprioception on the ankle) 15 patients. To survey muscle-power of the thigh, sense of position, sense of vibration, and record the primary standing time, when they were in hospital, after three months and six months.The results were proceeded for statistics and analysis.Result: The comparison of genu recurvatum related to primary standing time in the two groups showed statistical difference(P0.05). Genu recurvatum was non-related to muscle-power of the thigh in three month, the difference was not statistically significant between 1st group and 2nd group(P0.05). Change of muscle-power of the thigh compared in 3 month with 6 month on between 1st group and 2nd group, the existence of proprioception group muscle-power of the thigh from 2-3 grades to 4 grades, there were 15 patients with genu recurvatum were rectified entirely. The loss of proprioception group muscle power of the thigh from 2-3 grades to 4 grades, 1 was rectified in 10 patients, there were no Genu recurvatum add up 6 patients,and besides,proprioception resumed entirely.Genu recurvatum was not rectified in six months later, because there was not proprioception on ankle. There was prominent statistically significant(Fisher′s Exact Test)P=1.82E-070.01).Conclusion:When muscle-power of the thigh was very weak and primary standing time was premature for hemiplegic patients that there is proprioception on ankle, this is the important cause of genu recurvatum. The mechanism of genu recurvatum can not be rectified in stroke patients in six months is due to no proprioception on the ankle.
