Effects of cardiac rehabilitation on atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in patients with coronary artery disease

stable coronary artraining group (n=15), Qigong group(n=18) and control group (n= 15), The graded treadmill exercise tery disease (CAD) patients were randomly distributed to aerobic testing were conducted in all subjects. Blood samples were collected at rest and the end of each exercise stage. ANP was measured with the Immunoradiometric Assay technique. Echo- Doppler examination were also conducted in all subjects except control group. All examinations were repeated before and after treatment. aerobic training group patients underwent aerobic training with an intensity of 70% ̄85% HRmax, Qigong group patients received "Xingming Gong" training. Both trainings had 3 sections a week for 12 weeks. The results are the exercise capacity in areobic training group was significantly enhanced after training. The improvement was indicated by 19.4% increase of MET max and 14.4%increase of exercise time. The slope of ANP increments during exercise was lowered but not the absolute value of ANP concentration. The ANP increments during first and second stages of treadmill exercise were reduced in Qigong group after training. The changes are greater than that in the aerobic training group. Left heart structure and Doppler parameters were not changed significantly. This indicates that Qigong training may attenuate ANP response to exercise by some mechanism but not due to the change of left heart structure and central hemodynamics. Close correlations were found between ANP and left atrial diameter (P0.05) and left atrial area(P0. 05). Author's address: The Forth People's Hospital of Xuzhou
