RECOGNITION OF ALLELOPATHIC PHENOMENA IN ANCIENT CHINESE BOOKS AND RECORDS

Xia Wuping Tao Yanduo Zhang Baochen
As a new field of ecochemistry, allelopathy deals with the interinhibi- tion and interstimulation between plants or between plants and microorgan- isms caused by the metabolites, which are secreted from plants or microor- ganisms during their growth and development and get into the environment. China being a great and ancient country, its ancestors acquired an intimate knowledge of precious experiences about the interactions of plant growth through their production practices over a long period of time. There is in such knowledge and experiences no lack of material about allelopathy, and we find from what is recorded in ancient Chinese documents, some of which date far back to the Warring States period(475-221 BC),three allelopathic phenomena:autotoxicity, interspecific allelopathy and allelocatelysis. This may be of no little significance for both phytophysiologists and science historians.
