Comparison on Rooting Characteristics of Young Shoots from Different Ramie Varieties and Sources under Hydroponics Cultivation

Rooting is the first step for domesticating and industrial seedling of ramie under hydroponics cultivation. Rooting characteristics of different ramie genotypes under aquatic environment remain poorly understood. Besides,it was difficult to improve the reproductive rate of ramie by traditional cuttage propagation method using young shoots. In this research,96 varieties were used for profiling the rooting characteristic of ramie and rooting traits of young shoots from different sources were compared for finding suitable material for hydroponics cultivation. Results showed that: significant differences were detected among ramie varieties(26. 7%-100%),in which 49. 0% varieties rooted more than 90%,and 31. 2% varieties rooted lower than 80%; main stems from seedlings cultured by hydroponics had the similar rooting rate(93. 3%) to side shoots of ramie from field which was much higher than main stems from field(67. 7%). It suggested that abundant variations of rooting characteristics among ramie varieties give the plant high potential of domestication and improving,and main stem of ramie seedling cultured in hydroponics might be used as new source for reproducing.
