YANG Yun-yan CHU Qing-hua(Research Institute of Population and Region,Zhongnan University of Economics and Law,Wuhan Hubei 430073,China)
It has been widely observed that career mobility promotes the formation of the ability for the migrant workers from the countryside in the non-farm career transition and career development, which is of crucial importance to promote social integration.By using the survey data of the three counties in Hubei and Henan Provinces, this paper presents an empirical study on the factors affecting the formation of the ability, and finds that:Individual characteristics, family endowments and flowing characteristics of rural residents affect the forming of ability to achieve the steady non-farm career transition significantly.Human capital, social capital and social support also play important roles in the forming of ability to gain career promotion. The new generation of migrant workers has a distinct path of the forming of ability from the older generation.Generally, the new generation of migrant accumulates their ability by depending on human capital in a larger extent, especially, through formal education or skills training, while the older generation depends more on usage of traditional handicraft skills in the city.
