The Mechanism of Bitter Melon Power Preventing Obesity-related Inflammation

Objective: Study the effects of bitter melon power(BMP) on the prevention of obesity-related inflammation and its potential mechanism from the perspective of short fatty acids(SCFAs). Methods: Rats were fed with HFD and gavaged with water(4 mL/kg bw) and BMP(300 mg/kg bw) respectively for 14 weeks. Finally, we determinated the levels of blood glucose, serum lipid, inflammatory cytokines, endotoxin and SCFAs in intestinal tract of rats by Elisa and gas chromatography as to discover the potential mechanism. Results: BMP showed a higher anti-obesity activity with lower rate of increase of obese rats' body weights, significantly reversing glucose intolerance and hyperlipidemia, decreaseing the levels of inflammatory cytokines and endoxin. Morever, BMP markedly enhanced the production of acetic acid,propanoic acid, butyric acid in intestinal tract with the highest values 87.76 μmol/g, 5.34 μmol/g and 8.32 μmol/g respectively in the middle stage. Conclusion: BMP has benificial effects on the obesity-related inflammation, which is associated with the contents of SCFAs in intestinal.
