Chemical Constituents and Hepatoprotective Activity of Plantago depressa var.montata Kitag

AIM:To study the chemical constituents and hepatoprotective activity of Plantago depressa var.montata Kitag.METHODS:This plant was extracted with 80% ethanol,isolated and purified via silica gel column and Sephadex LH-20 as well as recrystallization.Structural identification of the compounds was based on physico-chemical properties and spectral analysis.Effects of compounds from Plantago depressa var.montata Kitag.extract on CCl 4-induced hepatocyte damage in vitro were observed.RESULT:Eleven compounds were isolated from this plant:apigenin(1),luteolin(2),catalpol(3),majoroside(4),β-sitosterol(5),daucosterol(6),stearic acid(7),oleanolic acid(8),martynoside(9),homoplantaginin(10)and hispidulin(11).Compounds 1,2,4,8~11 inhibited the hepatotoxic potential of CCl 4,when pretreated with hepatocytes.CONCLUSION:Compounds 1,2,4,7,9,10 and 11 have been isolated from this plant for the first time.Furthermore,compound 4 possesses potent hepatoprotective activity.
