Isolation and Identification of Capnocytophaga Species from Human Dental Plaque

Xiao Xiao-rong, et al., Institute of Stomatology Research, West China University of Medical Sciences, Chengdu 610044, Sichuan Province
The characteristics of 625 isolates of Capnocytophaga from 32 subgingival plaque samples in the healthy and diseased neriodontal sites were studied. The isolates were identified by (1)Gram negative rod with fusiform-shape. (2)Forming a "wet spreading" typical colonies on BHJ blood plates. (3)Growing in the presence of air+10%CO_2, but no growth in aerobic condition. (4) Production of acetic acid and succinic acid as the major metabolic acidic products. (5)Terminal pH in glucose broth is pH6. Capnocytophaga were classified as C.ochracea, C. sputigena, C.gingivae on the basis of acid production from dextran, amygdalin, eseulin, galactose, starch; nitrate reduction and hydrolysis of starch, gelatin, and esculin.
