Effect of Duroc Birth Weight on Their Growth and Feeding Traits in Fattening Stage

This experiment was conducted to study the effect of Duroc birth weight on their growth and feeding traits in fattening stage. We selected 230 experimental Duroc male piglets and divided them into high-and low-birth weight groups according their birth weight values. They were raised under the same commercial formula diet, man-controlled farm conditions and management manners. The growth and feeding traits of Duroc pigs were recorded and used for subsequently one-way anova test when their body weight at a range of(100±5)kg. Results showed that pigs in high birth weight group had significantly higher growth trait, which include daily gain during weight form 30 to 100 kg, loin muscle area, lean meat percentage, body length, body height and tube circumference at the weight of 100 kg compared to individuals in low birth weight group(P0.05). The low birth weight pigs had longer period to reach 100 kg(P0.01) than high birth weight pigs. The pigs from low birth weight group had higher feed conversion ratio than the pigs form high birth weight group when their body weight range from 30~100 kg(P0.01). Duroc piglets with high birth weight showed higher growth rate, feed efficiency and better body measurement features than the pigs with low birth weight during fattening stage.
