HIV Prevalence among Children Aged between 0-7 Years Old in Yining City, Xinjiang Province

Objective To detemiine HIV prevalence rates among children aged between 0-7 years old in Vining city, Xin-jiang province, a high HIV prevalence area.The data is useful as an intervention indicator to measure HIV infection rate among children. Methods A finger stick method was used to quickly draw two drops of blood form children.The blood sample was analyzed and measured for HIV antibodies.Mothers of children diagnosed as HTV antibody positive were also followed up and tested for HIV antibod-ies.Results Among 693 children surveyed, one child was found infected with HIV.The HIV prevalence rate was 0.15% among chil-dren aged between 0-7 years.The motlier of the HIV infected child vvas also tested HIV antibody positive, both were infected with HIV - l C subtype identified by DNA gene analysis. Condusions HIV has spread from high risk groups to the general populan'on in Yin-ingcity.More measures are needed to control the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
