The value of plasma endotoxin and procalcitonin levels in diagnosis of bacterial infectious diseases

Objective To investigate the value of plasma endotoxin(ET)and procalcitonin(PCT)levels in diagnosis of bacterial infectious diseases.Methods The levels of plasma ET and PCT were detected in the bacterial infection group(31 cases)and the non-bacterial infection group(23 cases)by kinetic turbidimetric assay and immunofluorescence chromatography respectively. Results The levels of ET and PCT in the bacterial infection group were significantly higher than those in the non-bacterial infection group(t=14.33, 18.52, P0.01). The sensitivity of applying ET and PCT for diagnosis of bacterial infection was 90.3% and 93.5%, and the specificity was 91.3% and 87.0% respectively(ET≥0.1 EU/ml, PCT≥0.1 ng/ml as positive standard).Conclusion The plasma ET and PCT levels can distinguish bacterial and non-bacterial infections, which is of great significance for early diagnosis of bacterial infection.
