Effect of Water Stress on Physiological Characteristics of Oriental Tobacco Leaf

The effect of water stress on some physiological characteristics of oriental tobacco leaf was studied with two cultivars,Basma and Samsun.The results showed that the chlorophyll content,net photosynthetic rate and activity of nitrate reductase were decreased distinctly due to drought treatment.The marked increases in proline and malondialdehyde(MDA),a product of membrane—lipid peroxidation,were oerved under water stress.All changes except proline content of Samsun were greater than that of Basma at the same stress intensity.It indicated that Samsun was more susceptible to water stress than Basma.
