Determination of Interfibre Bond Strength in Plant Fibrous Materials and Its Application in SCMP from Kenaf Core

A method was derived for the determination of the interfibre bond strength in plant fibrous materials.Data thus obtained was employed to predict the optimum chemical pretreatment in kenaf core SCMP pulping.It was found that 6-10% Na2SO3 was needed for the sulfonation in the SCMP pulping of kenaf core, giving a pulp yield of 84-88%. IR spectrum data for the sulfonated kenaf core was found to be linearly related to the extent of sulfonation.
