Clinicopathologic analysis of breast lesions associated with multiple papillomas

CHEN Chang-zhao (Linyi Medical College,Linyi 276002,China)
Objective To explore the relationship between multiple papillomas (MPS) and mammary cancers in patients with mammary lesions. Methods Twenty cases of mammary lesions complicated with MPS underwent restrospective clinicopathologic analysis. All cases had been found to have fibrocystic lesions, atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH),atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH),lobular carcinoma in situ(LCIS)and atypical papillary constitution. They were compared with 8 cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)and 12 cases of invasive carcinoma (INV).Results MPS were characterized by the tissue fibrosis inside and outside the ducts and proliferative fibrocystic lesions of different degrees.Five of 8 cases (62.5%)of atypical papillma and 8 of 20 cases(40.0%)of atypical hyperplasia revealed these characteristics. Conclusion MPS is usually related to such malignant diseases as AHD,ALH or LCIS and the bilateral MPS may greatly increase the risk of development of mammary cancer.
