Developing role delineation in graduate nursing education

While the majority of nurses are involved in bedside care, health care developments spur the advancement of the profession through role specialization for experts in education, advanced practice and administration. Education and practice are closely aligned to speed the response to shifts in the environment and innovations throughout the discipline. Role development in graduate education delineates areas of professional involvement. Educators need competence in educational theories and delivery methods, clinicians need essential skills for evidence based practice to improve outcomes, and administrators must know how to manage the environment as well as the point of care for the system to have positive outcomes. This paper describes an approach to role delineation in masters' education as one way to advance the profession and address increasing concerns about health care delivery.
