Effects of Priming on Water Absorption and the Vigor of Aged Barley Seeds

To investigate the effects of polyethylene glycol(PEG)and calcium chloride(CaCl2)solutions on the vigor of barley aged seeds,and to screen out the most suitable barley seed initiators,in this study,two different varieties of barley seeds,which were treated with high temperature 40℃,high humidity(relative humidity 80%),artificial aging for 0d,3.5d,6.5dand 9.5d,were used as materials under the condition of 25℃.The seeds were initiated with 20% PEG solution and 1% CaCl2 solution for 24 h.The changes of water absorption,germination rate,germination potential,germination index,vigor index,relative electrical conductivity and malondialdehyde(MDA)content were analyzed.The results showed that the PEG solution was better than the CaCl2 solution in the two initiators.The water absorption,germination rate,germination potential,germination index and vigor index of aged seeds of two barley varieties increased significantly,and their electrical conductivity and MDA content decreased significantly.The seed priming could not only improve the germination characteristics of seeds,but also prevent the seed from absorbing damage and repair its aging damage.
