DETERMINATION OF THE PALEOMAGNETIC FIELD OF DATONG REGION AND ITS GEOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The intensities and directions of paleomagnetic field are obtained from Jinshan, Heishan and Tongshuitou basalt section in Datong volcanic cluster using Thellier method and vector analysis. The results of the paleomagnetic field show that the activation times of Datong volcanic cluster arc from 0.19Ma to 0.098Ma and that the rcmanent characterristics of the surrounding rock change with its distance from the intrusion, which can be divided into three types: the layer from the contact to 15 cm into the surrounding rock has same remanence with the intrusion; 10 cm below above layer is a transition zone; the layer below which keeps its original remanence.
