Temperature Effect on Diurnal and Seasonal Variation of CH_4 Emission from Rice Fields

Labortory and field experiments show that the change of air temperature is the nature for diurnal variation of CH4 emission from rice fields. The influence of soil temperature on CH4 emission rate is obviously observed in labortory experiment, with a lag phase of 10-11 hours. After the phase ajusted, there is very good linear correlation between CH4 emission rates and soil temperatures (R0.80, N = 24) with the average dF/dT as 61.0±59.0 μgCH4·m-2 ·h-1·K-1. CH4 emittion rates in fields correlate best with the temperatures of flooded water, shallow soil layer (≤2cm) and air, with dF/dt water varylng from 200.0 to 4450.0 μgCH4·m-2·h-1·K-1, but poorly with the temperatures of deep soil (5 cm). The diurnal variation of air temperature changes the CH4 transport efficiency, thus causing the diurnal variation of CH4 emission. The magnitude of temperature effect of diurnal methane emission is relatively stable during the early rice season but varies dramatically in the late rice, which decreases with the time of rice growing. Taking the seasonal variation of soil CH4 production rates into account, the change of CH4 transport efficiency can be related to air temperature and ice plant growing status. Weather condition,flooded water, field fertilization, soil type and rice variety may change the temperature effect.The different variation trend of air temperature during the early and late rice growing period makes the seasonal pattern of CH4 emission be different. The better correlation is found between the daily averages of CH4 emission rates and the temperatures of flooded water and shallow soil, and better in short time scale than in longer one. A clear exponential relation is found during the whole late rice vegetation period between the instantaneous CH4 emission rates and temperatures of shallow soil (or water): F=a0ea1t (R =0.87, N=822). But in different temperature region, the constants may be slightly different.
