Han Dynasty Tombs Discovered at Zhangjiabu

Xi'an Municipal Institute of Archaeology Cultural Relics Protection;
The Zhangjiabu Han dynasty tombs are located in Zhangjiabu community, Weiyang district, Xi'an, northeast of the crossing of 7 Fengcheng Road and Weiyang Road and about 2.3 kilometres east of the Han dynasty Chang'an city site. From 7 to 31 March 2013, the Xi'an Municipal Institute of Archaeology and Cultural Relics Protection discovered forty-two Western Han tombs here inside a construction site, from which a large number of exquisite ancient objects were excavated. Most of these tombs are built with vertical tunnel and earth chamber; only a few are vertical earth pit tombs. The width of tomb tunnels is wider or narrower than that of tomb chambers; sometimes they are almost the same. Niches are found in some tomb tunnels or chambers. Most of the tomb occupants were buried in a supine position. Abundant traces of coffins are found. The tombs are closely arranged within a small graveyard and most are westor north-facing. They are dated to the early or mid-to-late Western Han dynasty. Probably the tomb occupants were residents of Chang'an city. The painted bronze mirror from tomb M29, with a diameter over 27 centimetres, provides new clues for researchers.
