“Eight Trigrams” Pattern on a Yuan Dynasty Blue-and-White Incense Burner

Guo Meixia;
The so-called "Eight Trigrams" pattern on a blue-and-white incense burner on display in the Ceramics Gallery of the Palace Museum in Beijing is different from Eight Trigrams that we are familiar with. By comparing it with Eight Trigrams on other objects in the Palace Museum and exploring the evolution of Yi Jing [易经] and Tai Xuan Jing [太玄经 or The Canon of Supreme Mystery] that is related to the studies on Yi Jing,the current author argues that the pattern on the object under discussion is taixuan symbols,instead of Eight Trigrams. Furthermore,the possibility of taixuan symbols appearing on a Yuan object is discussed based on historical records and the evolution of taixuan philosophy. The author also points out that inconformity between the pattern under discussion and the taixuan philosophy is the result of abstruseness of taixuan principles,loose quality control on non-governmental porcelain production and the influence from more common Eight Trigrams symbols. In the end,suggestions are made about updating the title and descriptions of the object on display and adding basic information in the label about the connections between Yi Jing and taixuan philosophy.
