Western Jin Dynasty Epitaphs of Shi Xian and Shi Ding in the Palace Museum:Excavation and Circulation

Wang Yulai;
The epitaphs of Shi Xian and Shi Ding,dated to the 2nd year of the Yongjia reign in Western Jin dynasty(308 AD),were excavated by tomb robbers in the northern suburbs of Luoyang,Henan province in the 8th year of the Republic of China(1919). They are now in the Palace Museum in Beijing. There have been considerable controversies over the exact date and place of excavation and the circulation of these two epitaphs,which have direct influences on deciding their authenticity and academic value. After reviewing related documents,the current author comes to the conclusion that information in Records on Excavation Dates and Places of Stone Tablets in Luoyang,written by a Luoyang-based antiquity dealer Guo Yutang,is the most reliable. By referring to excavated documents and ancient literature and after investigating the circulation of stone tablets from Luoyang,the current author believes that the epitaph of Shi Xian in the Luoyang Ancient Art Museum is definitely a reproduction. Not long after being excavated,the epitaphs of Shi Xian and Shi Ding were acquired by Zhou Jin,a famous collector on bronze and stone inscriptions in Peiping. After Zhou passed away in the 26 th year of the Republic of China(1937),his family donated the two epitaphs along with other stone inscriptions from the Han and Jin dynasties to the Palace Museum.
