A Research on Informal Essays at Youjuguan

Li Jiguang;
According to related historical data,it is found out that Informal Essays at Youjuguan [友菊馆随笔](hand copied,National Museum of China) was written in the 9th year of the Republic of China by Hua Danran. A former employee of the Beijing-Fengtian Railway Bureau and later the Tianjin Museum,Hua was very fond of Chinese operas. Informal Essays at Youjuguan records his early experiences and poems dedicated to opera actresses. Related descriptions in this book and correspondence between Hua and his friend Guan Zhuoran are useful for tracing back the early development of the Tianjin Museum. Upon its establishment,the museum was under the Education Department of Zhili provincial government. It was soon taken over by the industrial sector,resulting in a chaos in personnel and reorganization. Most details about Chinese opera actresses in Informal Essays at Youjuguan are not found in other accounts. The current author reviews the life experience,careers and active periods of four actresses–Yu Zixian,Su Lanfang,Zhang Xiaoxian and Liang Chunlou,in an attempt to provide more data for the study on the history of Chinese opera.
