Work on Ethnic Issues in the Early Post-Liberation Period in Diqing,Yunnan Province

He Dongmei;
From 1950 to 1957, a series of policies concerning ethnic and religious affairs were implemented under the Chinese Communist Party's lead in Diqing area. After the peaceful liberation of Diqing, the establishment of county and district government was the foundation to carry out the work on ethnic issues and guarantee the interests of all ethnic groups. The CPC staff managed to win over powerful Wang Xueding, unite religious figures and local tribal chiefs and quell the rebellion of Yang Zhenhua. They united various powers to set the basis for ethnic unity. Through interview and investigation, they figured out the ethnic and religious conditions and propagated related policies;they conciliated the conflict between powerful individuals and groups and facilitated the ethnic unity and national integration. They practically promoted the business and motivated the progress and development of ethnic minorities. Moreover, they organized armed force to maintain the harmony and stability of Diqing. Those achievements that the CPC had made set a solid foundation for the establisment of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and the development in all social undertakings.
